The design of the Interconnect allows you to open the door knob and door latch with one quick motion. These pieces are cleverly "interconnected" in the same piece of hardware. 

This is a valuable safety feature that is particularly useful in the case of an emergency and residents need to quickly exit a building. Some US states are starting to require these "single egress" locks that open with a single motion.
